Contributions to the fracture mechanics of thermoplastic composite materials at high temperature : experimental and numerical analyzes - The present work was aimed at investigating the fracture mechanics in woven-ply TP (PPS) based laminates at T > Tg/c/pps. A fractography analysis and microscopic observations of fracture surfaces were used to apprehend the damage mechanisms in C/PPS at high temperature (HT) in the presence of a crack. For quasi-isotropic laminates (elastic brittle behavior), several techniques were used to investigate the tenacity at initiation and propagation. In particular, the acoustic emission showed to be particularly relevant as it allows to detect the crack initiation, propagation but also to follow the evolution of the damage. For cross-ply laminates (ductile behavior), an approach based on the calculation of integral J using the load separation method was used. This method showed its capability to provide the J-R curves of composites with very ductile HT behavior for different crack length over specimen width ratios a/W. Numerically, a linear spectral viscoelastic model and a generalized Norton viscoplastic model we

On the effect of sintering temperature on the fracture energy of an Alumina-Mullite-Zirconia castable at 600°C - Refractory castables are utilized in hazardous environments and thus their reliability should be accurately evaluated to avoid incidents. This work aims to measure the fracture energy of a high-alumina refractory with mullite-zirconia aggregates at 600°C. Wedge Splitting Tests were performed on 5 samples with different sintering temperatures. Images were acquired and analyzed via Digital Image Correlation (DIC). Notch Opening Displacements were used to evaluate the fracture energy at room and high tempartures. For the studied material, a 50°C increase in the sintering temperature increased about 30% the fracture energy of the material, which is also higher at 600°C when compared to room temperature measurements.
Effect of Lüders and Portevin-Le Chatelier localization bands on plasticity and fracture of notched steel specimens studied by DIC and FE simulations - The impact of the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect on plasticity and fracture ahead of a severe notch is investigated by DIC field measurements for C-Mn steel. The PLC effect causes an intermittent activity of highly localized strain rate bands. This first high temperature investigation of the effect of a notch on the PLC localization bands is successfully reproduced numerically in terms of strain localization in 3D FE simulations. This thereby validates quantitatively the McCormick-type model under these complex conditions. It is found that, when the PLC effect is at play at elevated temperature (175 • C), a flat to slant crack transition is observed. In contrast, at room temperature, when only Lüders bands are active, the crack remains mostly flat, normal to the loading direction of the SENT samples. This behaviour may be related to the early loss of symmetry and intermittency of the plastic zone that is found for PLC even affecting the initial Lüders bands at elevated temperature. During the sla

Anisotropic intergranular damage development and fracture in a 14Cr ferritic ODS steel under high-temperature tension and creep - This work addresses damage mechanisms at high temperature of a hot extruded 14Cr oxide dispersion strengthened steel rod, in particular, anisotropy induced by its strong morphological and crystallographic texture. Under uniaxial tension, intergranular damage and unstable fracture increased with test temperature; they appeared much easier along the rod axis than perpendicular to it. Creep fracture of smooth specimens involved crack initiation from the side surfaces and intergranular crack propagation, accompanied by intergranular damage. In order to get rid of fracture surface oxidation by the air environment, a methodology promoting crack nucleation from inside the specimen was built. From tensile and creep tests on notched specimens the fracture initiation location and fracture stability were first mapped as a function of test temperature, maximal stress triaxiality and loading direction. Then, for the first time to the authors' knowledge, interrupted tests on notched tensile and creep specimens, followed by
